Highlighting the essentials
The name of this project came to me in between gobsmacking bursts of bass and sultry guitar licks. It was, of course, Jai Paul’s exhilarating cover of Jennifer Page’s “Crush” on his revered, almost mythical, album of leaked demos, Leak 04-13 (Bait Ones).
A music blog has always been an idea that’s bounced around in my head for years. I wrote several album reviews for a website that is no longer around in my college undergrad years, and have since dabbled in long-form essays about some of my favorite artists and genres that have never seen the light of day. Part of the reason I never started one was because I simply couldn’t think of a good enough name, because I believe the name of a website dedicated to talking about music is critical in determining the type of content that such a website would have. Thanks to Jai Paul, this blog can now exist.
You won’t find scathing critiques of albums here. Instead, I wish to illuminate music I find special, music that I think is essential to anyone who considers them a music fan. I’ll touch on albums that hold a precious place in my heart, genres that I think need to be dissected in order to fully appreciate, artists that have pushed the boundaries of the medium, and everything else in between.
In short, real hits only.
